“As a photography student, and by extension as a photography teacher, one invariably ends up being in front of the camera lens rather than behind. A browse through photographs stored in boxes or saved on hard drives revealed many photographs of me that recall an event of semi-reluctant posing; the induction project to ‘take a photograph that communicates something about yourself’, the 30 minute group exercises to perfect studio lighting, becoming a lighting test dummy, mocking-up a scenario for the benefit of a class, or even taking part in more elaborate staged scenes as a favour to a friend. So is photographic education about the act of looking or posing? Looking at these photographs  I can see that awkwardness, but I can see something else…I think I might have been starting to enjoy myself.”
